When custom software beats SaaS

Most businesses should buy most of their software. Nobody needs a home-made Microsoft 365, payroll system or payment provider. Custom software earns its place in a narrower set of cases:

• Your workflow is what makes you different. Your quoting, planning or production process doesn't fit a generic tool, and bending it costs time every day.
• The workarounds cost more than the licence. Spreadsheets between two SaaS tools, copy-paste between systems, someone whose job is reconciling exports.
• Seats get expensive. Per-user pricing that was fine at 10 users can look very different at 40. Run a three-year calculation with your own numbers.
• It has to talk to systems SaaS doesn't connect to: SAP, Oracle, Odoo, a legacy database, a local payment provider.
• You sell it. If the software is the product, you want to own it.

AI has made building cheaper, not free, and that moved the break-even point. We work through the full calculation in build it or buy it: the calculation has changed.

How a custom software project runs

Every project starts with scoping together: the goal, the users, the systems involved and what is already there. For anything with real data we draw the data model first, as an entity relationship diagram, because changing a database later is the most expensive change there is. We explain why in starting your project with an ERD. Then you get an honest estimate and a plan, not a fixed date dressed up as a promise.

We build in weekly steps. Every week you see what was delivered and the hours it took, and you can change priorities. Code goes into your repository from day one, with a staging environment you can click through yourself. A lead developer reviews architecture and code, so the system stays maintainable after the first release.

Projects change while they are built. That is why we work on time and materials instead of a fixed price: you pay for what is done, and you can steer. After launch we can stay on for hosting, monitoring and further development, or hand everything over to your own team.

Project, dedicated developer or subscription

There are three ways to work with us. Pick the one that matches how much work there is and who should manage it.

What drives the cost of custom software is mostly scope: the number of user roles, integrations, how much data needs migrating, and how strict the demands on security and uptime are. A small internal tool and a multi-tenant SaaS platform are very different budgets, and the estimate after scoping tells you which one you are looking at. You own the code, and we take over existing code

The code and designs we make are yours. They live in your repository and your cloud accounts, not ours, so you can bring in another team or hire in-house whenever you like. No licence fee on your own software, no hostage situation.

It works the other way too: a lot of our work starts with someone else's code. A build that stalled, a freelancer who disappeared, a legacy system nobody dares to touch. We start with a code review and a short list of what is broken and what is risky, then fix the most important things first.
